3. Secondary email signatures [BG25 p.29–32]

Section titled “3. Secondary email signatures [BG25 p.29–32]”

An optional custom footer graphic placed above the signature.

  • Informational in nature, not promotional. “The email signature should not be considered a marketing channel.” Suitable subjects: holiday shipping reminders, trade shows, local events, weather impacts.
  • Designed by the business unit creative team, following brand standards.
  • Static, not interactive.
  • Timely — do not send holiday shipping information in February.
  • Art no wider than 1300px, no taller than 300px [BG25 p.30]. The recommended working width is 750px [BG25 p.44].

4. Internal communications surfaces [BG25 p.43–46]

Section titled “4. Internal communications surfaces [BG25 p.43–46]”

“When crafting all messaging, internal communications need to follow the same Patterson standards of voice, style and font selection.”

Patterson Priorities — the weekly all-employee e-newsletter, sent every Thursday.

  • Include visuals where available and a link if needed.
  • Draft “a few, simple lines, including who, what, where, when and how.”
  • Email a draft to Corporate Communications with an ideal publication date. Deadline: the Friday prior to publication.

5. Copy mechanics that bite in Office documents

Section titled “5. Copy mechanics that bite in Office documents”
  • Sentence case for titles, headlines, subheads, body and captions [BG25 p.59]; email subject lines and preheader text too [BG25 p.58].
  • Ampersands: not a substitute for and, but permitted in PowerPoint titles and bullets to save space — be consistent within the deck [COPY22].
  • Phone numbers use periods, not hyphens [COPY22].
  • Ranges use an en dash with spaces: 6:30 – 7 p.m. [COPY22].
  • No Inc. or Co. in content [BG25 p.10].
  • Department names: the Finance department, the Human Resources team — unit capitalized, the word department/team not [COPY22].
  • Job titles capitalized only before a name [COPY22].
  • Memo TO: lines have preferred recipient terms — see copy-style-guide references/mechanics.md §12.

[BG25 p.26] gives audible reading technology as a reason for the sentence-case rule, and [BG25 p.62] cites ADA standards for banner ads. In an Office context that means: sentence case, real heading styles rather than manually enlarged text, alt text on images, and enough contrast.

[TBD: no WCAG conformance target (AA vs AAA) or version is stated in the 2025 Brand Guide; DesignSystem_042120 targets WCAG 2.0 only.] [TBD: no Patterson-published accessibility checklist for Office documents was found.]
